How does a GT-R with a head start compare to Bugatti's hyper car?

If you were new to the world of cars, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Nissan GT-R was completely unbeatable, such is the ways of internet forums and YouTube comments.

But how does it actually compare to the king of fast cars -the Bugatti Veyron? Way back in 2009 we headed to Bruntingthorpe for a drag race on its two mile long runway to find out.

In reality it’s not the most natural of pairings, one car being a hypercar with unparalleled levels of engineering which was once the fastest road car ever. This, compared to a sports coupe which at the time had less than half the power. Admittedly, the ATTESA E-TS four-wheel-drive system in the GT-R is hugely impressive, but it’s still a challenge, even if the GT-R did win car of the year once.

Both the GT-R and Veyron are heavy cars. The Nissan weighs in at 1740kg and the Veyron tips the scales at 2017kg. Thanks to the Veyron’s 1000bhp however it still puts its power to weight figures in its favour - 540bhp/ton for the Bugatti and 279bhp/ton for the 478bhp GT-R.

To give the Nissan a fighting chance we had another race and let it have a head start. For the second drag race, the GT-R was driven flat out round the top corner at Bruntingthorpe while the Veyron lay in wait at the start. Once the GT-R reached the start line, the Bugatti set-off. Can the Bugatti catch the GT-R after a sling shot head start? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.
