French photographer Renaud Marion gets classic cars floating for his latest series, Air Drive, all in the name of art

We’ve been worrying all week about whether cars of the future will feature a manual gearbox (join in with the discussion here), but it turns out we could have a much bigger problem on our hands. If French photographer Renaud Marion’s work is to be believed, we should really be worrying as to whether cars will still have wheels…

With his latest Air Drive series, Renaud has created visionary images of classic cars appearing to defy the laws of gravity. Edited to hover above the ground in retro surroundings, Renaud has managed to avoid butchering the curvaceous lines of iconic classic cars, and instead his finished work is nothing short of stunning.

Influence for Renaud’s work can be found in his childhood years of the sci-fi crazy 1980s. ‘As a child, I imagined the new millennium with flying cars, spaceships, parallel worlds, extra-terrestrials living with us on earth and time travel,’ he explains. ‘We would have all been dressed up in space outfits and equipped with laser pistols. These are the dreams of a normal child, I think… I hope.’

Cars to feature in Renaud’s series range from an Aston Martin DB5, Mercedes ‘gullwing’ 300SL and Lincoln Continental. Whilst some of these cars aren’t exactly renowned for their inspiring handling characteristics, we’re not entirely sure if a ‘de-wheeling’ would do much to improve the situation. It certainly looks cool though, don’t you think?

This artwork might not fit in with the usual bill of evo road tests and track battles, but with such a stunning set of images on display, we had to share them with you. Our gallery of Renaud’s images sits above for your enjoyment. Oh, and if you like them, the cheapest image can be yours for just shy of £1500…
