VW and JB attack Nurburgring 24hrs

evo's John Barker will be piloting a gas Volkswagen Scirocco at Nurburgring 24hrs

The Volkswagen Scirocco is tackling the Nurburgring 24 hour race once again. Last year the Scirocco GT24 drove the Green Hell's endurance race, and managed a one-two in the 2-litre turbo class before the Golf GTI-based coupe had even gone on sale.

The Scirocco is returning to the scene of its success on May 23-24, and our very own John Barker will be one of the drivers. Not only that, but he'll be racing a GT24 car running on CNG (compressed natural gas). It's based on the successful 2-litre turbo car, and produces close to 300bhp and 260lb ft of torque. The power goes to the front wheels via VW's six-speed DSG gearbox.

JB will be racing alongside a host of names, highlights of which include former rallying ace Carlos Sainz, Dakar winner Giniel de Villiers and VW board member Dr Ulrich Hackenburg. In total there will be five Sciroccos in action - two running on CNG, and three petrol-powered coupes.

Both the CNG Scirocco and JB will be in action this weekend (April 18) in a four-hour Ring race. You can read about Barker's preparations in Issue 131 of evo, out April 29, and keep your eyes peeled on our for updates and blogs from the man himself.
