Vauxhall's aging Corsa is now available in warm GSi trim, but will it be good enough to take on newer rivals?

Vauxhall has confirmed it is to add a GSI model to its existing Corsa line-up. Offered only as a three-door model, the new mild-hatch will be available to order from early summer 2018 with deliveries scheduled for the end of the year.

Positioned above the current SRi VX-Line model, the new Corsa GSI is expected to be powered by the 1.4-litre 148bhp turbo-charged engine from the Adam S and will be fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox. Torque will be in the region of 162lb ft.

Taking the chassis from the more powerful Corsa VXR model, this latest addition to Vauxhall’s new GSI range follows the introduction of the Insignia GSi earlier this year, and like the saloon, hatch and Tourer it will focus on dynamics and agility over outright performance. To this end, the GSI will have the same stiffer springs and damper rates as the VXR and share its ride-height, too, and will be fitted with 18-inch wheels and tyres. While further technical details are thin on the ground, Vauxhall has confirmed that the VXR’s Drexler limited-slip diff won’t be fitted or available as an option on the GSI.

The three-door only Corsa GSI is expected to weigh around 1100kg and should see the new mild-hatch reach 60mph in a shade under 8-seconds and top 130mph. It will be identifiable by its own GSI body kit, comprising of a new front bumper with larger air intakes and a honeycomb grille, deeper side sills and carbon-fibre trim and a larger rear-spoiler to reduce lift.

Recarco seats, a leather steering wheel and aluminium pedals are all part of the Corsa GSI interior makeover and both Apple Car Play and Andriod Auto will be available via Vauxhall’s InteliLink Infotainment system.

A rival to the likes of Ford’s new Fiesta ST-Line, Vauxhall has yet to announce a price for the new Corsa GSI, but expect it to be in the region of £16,000 when the car is available to order from late May 2018.
