Vauxhall Corsa GSi to take on Fiesta ST-Line with VXR-inspired touches.

Vauxhall has disclosed performance figures and technical specifications for its forthcoming Corsa GSi. Slotting into the model line-up below the VXR variant, the warm hatch will go toe-to-toe with the Ford Fiesta ST-Line. Vauxhall has held back pricing, but confirmed the GSi will land on showroom floors in September 2018, with order books due to open in July.

The GSi’s outputs place it in warm hatch territory as opposed to hot. Its turbocharged 1.4-litre, four-cylinder engine develops 148bhp and 162lb ft of torque – 10bhp and 29lb ft more than the Fiesta ST-Line, respectively. That translates to a marginal advantage against the stopwatch: the GSi scrambles from a standing start to 62mph in 8.9sec, only 0.1sec faster than the Ford. Furthermore, the GSi’s top speed of 128mph is a fraction higher than the warm Fiesta’s 125mph.

Aiding the respectable acceleration is a close-ratio, six-speed manual gearbox, which transmits drive to the front axle. While there's no mention of a limited-slip differential like in the VXR, it’s unlikely the GSi will be unruly thanks to the sturdy underpinnings courtesy of its more powerful stablemate. To this end, the GSi will have the same stiffer springs and damper rates as the VXR and share its ride-height, too, and will be fitted with 18-inch wheels and tyres.

A sporty body kit will mark out the GSi from the rest of the Corsa range. Large front air intakes either side of the front apron, a sculpted bonnet similar to the VXR’s and a functional rear wing – to reduce lift – complete the exterior makeover. Step inside, and you’ll find a pair of Recaro seats as well as aluminum pedals, which offer further distinction.

Vauxhall is yet to announce a price for the new Corsa GSi, but expect it to be in the region of £16,000 when the order books open.
