Jaguar F type R AWD v Porsche 911 Turbo S - which is fastest?

14 Jul 2016

Our latest drag race pits British brawn against Germanic efficiency against the clock.

Jaguar’s F type R AWD is a sublime British sports car with huge performance levels and a thunderous soundtrack to match. Its 5-litre, supercharged V8 produces a not inconsiderable 542bhp at 6500rpm and 501lb ft at 3500rpm, with its slick 8-speed automatic gearbox sending all that power and torque to all four wheels with very little effort. At a claimed 1730kg, it also benefits from being fitted with optional carbon-ceramic brakes.

But, and it’s a big but, it’s going up against the formidable 911 Turbo S. All 572bhp at 6750rpm, 553lb ft at 2250rpm and 1600kg of it. It, too, is four-wheel drive but its PDK double clutch gearbox has one fewer ratio, although it also has that 130kg weight advantage. And that horsepower advantage. And more torque. And it should have greater traction off the line thanks to its engine position…

A forgone conclusion? Let’s find out.

evo's Drag Battles were all conducted at Alconbury's Cambridgeshire runway on a dry surface. All cars were supplied from manufacturers' press fleets on standard OEM tyres with the manufacturers were not aware of the tests being conducted.
